Breaking News

Thursday, July 20 - Week 3 - 2010 Camp Season

Dear Parents,

The problem with the water at Gander Brook has been found in a section of pipe that needs to be repaired at the cooks’ cabin. Trench, repair, and refill estimates run between $2,000-5,000. Donations are needed.

Wednesday, July 21 - Week 3 - 2010 Camp Season

Dear Parents,

While we are still in the process of getting our tap water re-approved for drinking, campers have been affected little if at all by this process. They all have a bottle of water with their names that they carry around and can get refilled at our coolers in the lodge. Bottled water is stocked in the shower houses for brushing teeth and drinking. We have five pallets of Poland Springs Water being delivered today, so our campers and staff will have an abundance of refreshing and healthy water to drink for the rest of the camp season.

You’ll also be pleased to know that we were closely scrutinized by state inspectors yesterday who examined every aspect of our camp including its kitchen, procedures, safety measures, compliance, and certifications. Gander Brook Camp did very well in the inspection. Just imagine how impressive it is, among other things, to enter one of the cabins and find it cleaned meticulously, bunks made, luggage lined up, clothes arranged uniformly, etc.!

So, despite the momentary setback of the order to use boiled or bottled water, we are having great fun at Gander Brook and are thankful for the trust that you've placed in our camp and our staff.

Gratefully,

Shawn Daggett

Monday, July 19 - Week 3 - 2010 Camp Season

Dear Parents,

At Gander Brook we monitor our drinking water constantly to ensure the good health of all our campers and staff. Although our private lab testing, conducted by the Maine Rural Water Agency, found our water to be safe, we failed our most recent test submitted to the State of Maine. We are cooperating with both the state and its consulting agency, Maine Rural Water, to clear up the discrepancy. In the meantime, we are taking every precaution to guarantee the safety of all the children and have instructed all campers and staff to drink only bottled or boiled water. All food preparation will also be with bottled or boiled water. According to all tests, our water is safe for bathing and showering. We are actively working with the State and our testing lab to determine the source of the problem, if there is one, and to resolve the situation quickly and safely. We wanted you to hear this first from us. If you have any questions, you can call the camp directly at 207-998-4369.

Sincerely,

Shawn Daggett
