News - January 2008

Committee Reports
Web Site
  • The possibility of on-line registration is being investigated.
  • He will continue to work with our summer camp director to ensure timely camping week updates.
Summer Program
  • Jon and Amber White will not be available as Assistant Directors this year.
  • The request that Board members and staff not use their cell phones when around campers.
  • A request for Paintball to be added as an activity this year and that our archery equipment be upgraded.
Recruiting
  • Joe asked for prayers as he is leaving on Sunday, 1/20/2008, for Lubbock, Tx. He will visit colleges at Lubbock, Oklahoma Christian, Harding University, David Lipscomb and Freed-Hardman.
Nursing
  • The need for a medical overseer, who needs to be an MD, physicians assistant or nurse practitioner, was raised. This is a requirement to meet state regulations. Scott will provide a summary of the requirements for this position to all Board members. We are still in need of medical personnel for each week but weeks 2 and 4. All of these medical personnel must be licensed in Maine. Scott assured us that a Maine license is not difficult for folks that are licensed in other states.
Retreats
  • N.H. will be organizing the annual retreats this coming fall. Linda Linscomb will oversee the Ladies Retreat and Park Linscomb will handle the Mens Retreat. The Mens Retreat speaker will be Monty Cox, Dean of Missions at Harding University.
Education
  • Danny distributed his report that showed the probable theme of “Holiness” for the summer.
  • There is a general need for teachers right now.
Fund Raising
  • John reported the probability of a fund-raising event to be held on May 17th at the Edgewood congregation. This would include a meal and talent show. He requested feed-back on this date being possible.
Old Business
Free T-shirts for campers.
  • Charles Hayes said that he has contacted a supplier and has good prices. He asked for direction on what should be on each shirt. Rich Davies will work on getting a design that is similar to our Jubilee year logo. It was also agreed that the shirt will have the camping year somewhere that is visible. Charlie Hayes agreed that final decisions on this could be deferred until the April meeting and a new design could be agreed upon.
New Log Cabin Program.
  • Brad Shaw reported that Lyle Duel, Rochester, NH, had been contacted and agrees to participate in this major endeavor. Lyle has experience in building cabins and has the needed contractor licensing that might be needed. Much discussion ensued about advertising and ways to contact our alumni. A motion was made by S. Delbaugh, 2nd by C. Hayes, to allow $300 from our treasury to be used in advertising in the Christian Chronicle Newspaper, appealing for alumni response. This is not to be an appeal for funds, at this time, just to build up our alumni data base. This motion was unanimously passed. There was also much discussion about establishing a church of Christ congregation at Gander Brook. It was noted that the size of the proposed building would allow for a congregation to meet very comfortably, and the residence portion of the building could provide housing for a preacher. No action was taken after this discussion.
Lawn mowers.
  • Joe McGrail reported that two (2) used riding lawnmowers had been purchased and are presently sitting in his garage.
Bus Drivers.
  • There was much discussion concerning camp’s need for bus drivers during the camp weeks. The problem has gotten worse because of the need for air-brake certified drivers. A sub-committee of Park Linscomb, Zane Daggett and Glenn Campbell will look into our summer transportation issues.
New Business
New Refrigerators.
  • A motion was made to allocate $5,000 for the purchase of two large refrigerators for our camp kitchen. Zane Daggett made the motion and Glenn Campbell seconded it. The motion passed unanimously.
Camper Fees.
  • The current tuition fees of $235 per week were discussed and it was decided that an increase is necessary based on our current expenses and the anticipation of significant increases. A motion was made by John Morrish to increase the tuition to $255 per week and leave the current discounts in place. This motion was passed unanimously.
Inviting Bobby Ross from the Christian Chronicle to the Mens Retreat.
  • A motion was made to invite Mr. Ross to the retreat and pay his reasonable expenses. The purpose of his visit would be to promote our camp and New England with him and ultimately within the Christian Chronicle. This motion passed unanimously.
Paintball and Archery Programs.
  • A motion was made and seconded by Charles Hayes and Glenn Campbell, respectively, to allocate $4,000 to purchase paintball and archery equipment prior to the summer camp season. There was a discussion about the wisdom of buying more or less expensive equipment based on previous lack of maintenance proper storage. This motion passed with 9 in favor and 1 abstaining. (Clyde Daggett had left the meeting at our lunch break)
Ropes Course.
  • Glenn Campbell moved and Charles Hayes seconded that $2,000 be allocated for the purchase of new equipment ($1,000) and the maintenance/repair of existing equipment. This motion was passed unanimously.
Election of New Board Member.
  • An application for admission to the Board from Robert Prestridge of Kittery, ME., had been received and reviewed. He was unanimously elected to the Board at this time.
Selection of Board Secretary.
  • At our October 2007 meeting, Leland King, current Secretary of the Board, submitted his resignation of that position. This requires us to elect a new Secretary. After a short discussion, Scott Delbaugh was nominated and nominations were closed. Therefore, Scott is our new Secretary.

Next Meeting: It will be held on April 19th in Kittery, ME at 10 a.m.
